Simultaneous recordings of fetal heart rate were made with recorders of different paper speed and rate scale. The characteristics of the recorder tend to emphasize either baseline variability or deceleration patterns. Since it appears that differences in emphasis in these two characteristics of fetal heart rates may simply be due to recorder differences, it is proposed that recorders of variable paper speed and heart rate scale be developed for clinical use.
