Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy in Pregnancy

RICHARD L. BURT, MD, FACOG and RICHARD G. WEAVER, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Ophthalmology, Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University and the North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Abstract

Three successful pregnancies in 2 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy are reported. It is suggested that despite the relatively high incidence of fetal wastage in women with this complication, as reported in the available literature, patients should be managed individually rather than recommend the pregnancy be terminated as a routine measure.
