MIDWIVES, MALE-MIDWIVES, AND NURSE-MIDWIVES

An Epitome of Relationships and Roles

A short account of the decline of the native midwife, the origin of the obstetric specialist and the emergence of the nurse-midwife is presented. The group attitudes and some of the reasons underlying them are given, emphasizing developments in the United States from the time of the original Colonies to the present.
