Abstract
The microscopic anatomy of 2 cases of transverse vaginal septum is described. The embryologic development of the vagina is reviewed, and previous discussions of the histology and the etiology of this congenital anomaly are summarized. The varied microscopic pattern of previously reported examples makes etiologic generalization difficult, but the histologic appearance of the present 2 specimens indicates that incomplete canalization of the vaginal plate is a significant, although perhaps not the sole, causative factor.
