Abstract
A case of Bowenoid vulvar atypia occurring as a sequel to herpetic vulvitis was observed in a 15-year-old pregnant schoolgirl. The lesions consisted of multiple small papules. Type II herpes titer was positive although active virus was not isolated from the fresh tissue. Electron-microscopy revealed the presence of viral particles in the nuclei of the atypical cells. Postpartum, the lesions regressed spontaneously and were replaced by normal epithelium. Cellular atypicality, a reversible expression of the herpes-virus, was stimulated by the pregnant state, and underwent complete postpartum regression. A period of observation, prior to operation for carcinoma in situ of the vulva is warranted, especially in the younger age groups.
