The association of pancreatitis with pregnancy has been reviewed and 1 case report added. It was noted that the relative incidence of pancreatitis in primigravidas is higher than in multigravidas. Primigravidas who develop pancreatitis also have a higher incidence of cholelithiasis than other primigravidas. The incidence of cholelithiasis in all patients with pancreatitis is the same regardless of parity. The maternal mortality is approximately 21%, unchanged from that of 20 years ago. Culdocentesis is suggested as an important aid in making a prompt diagnosis. Early recognition and rapid, conservative, nonsurgical treatment in necessary if the outcome of pancreatitis and pregnancy is to be favorable.
