Primary Carcinoma of Bartholin's Gland

MELVIN G. DODSON, MD, JAMES A. O'LEARY, MD and HERVY E. AVERETTE, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Miami School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla.

Abstract

Four Bartholin's gland carcinomas constituting 5.3% of vulvar cancer and illustrating the aggressive nature of this tumor are presented. A racial preponderance for Caucasians is mentioned. The pertinent literature is reviewed and recommendations consist of increased physician awareness, closer follow-up of benign disease, careful re-evaluation of unresponsive bartholinitis, frequent use of biopsy, excision rather than marsupilization of Bartholin's lesions in the elderly, and routine use of cytology at the time of marsupialization.
