Iatrogenic Spillage from Benign Cystic Teratoma Causing Severe Peritoneal Granulomas and Adhesions

Abstract

Just prior to vaginal delivery of this primigravida, a benign cystic teratoma ruptured at the moment of needle aspiration (through the vagina), spilling irritating sebaceous material and hair into the abdomen. The resulting dense, granulomatous adhesions were resected, and the left adnexa removed 3 months later. The confusing resemblance to peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculosis was noted. Management of adnexal cysts during pregnancy is discussed briefly.
