Terminal Ileum as Ureteral Substitute

PHILIP KRUPP, MD, FACOG, MILTON HOFFMAN, MD, FACOG and WILLIAM ROELING, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tulane University School of Medicine, and the Tulane Unit, Charity Hospital of Louisiana

Abstract

An fleal substitute was used to replace the pelvic ureter in 19 patients, 18 with carcinoma of the cervix; 21 ureters were replaced. By all functional and morphologic criteria the procedure was judged feasible and practical. There was one postoperative death due to septic shock. As long as functioning renal tissue remains above the diseased ureter, such Heal substitution is recommended when the ureter must be removed or when ureteral fistula of an intensely irradiated patient is to be repaired.
