Abstract
The method of suprapubic bladder drainage in which a fine-bore polyethylene tube and Hemovac suction are used was studied in 101 women and compared with a nearly equal number in whom Foley-catheter drainage was the method. Urinary tract infection was 27% in the suprapubic group, compared to 44% in the Foley group. The days of initial voiding were 3.7, as compared to 4.9 in the Foley group. The application of suction to the suprapubic drainage system resulted in less stoppage, more complete emptying of the bladder, simplification of nursing care, increase in patient comfort, and minimal complications.
