Problems of Ovulation Induction with Clomiphene Citrate with Report of a Case of Ovarian Hyperstimulation

MAXWELL ROLAND, MD, FACOG

From the New York Fertility Research Foundation, 72-35 112th St, Forest Hills, New York, NY 11375

Abstract

Clomiphene treatment to restore fertility in 142 anovulatory women resulted in ovulation in 72% of the patients with nonspecific anovuIation, in 56% of those with secondary amenorrhea, and in 53 % of the Stein-Leventhal group. Forty-seven pregnancies were initiated in treatment cycles (33 livebirths, 14 abortions). Twenty patients who failed to respond to clomiphene alone underwent retreatment that included HCG; 5 of 60 such treatment cycles were ovulatory and 1 patient achieved a successful pregnancy. The clinical course of 1 patient who experienced an ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is described.
