Endoscopic Examination of Fetal Scalp and Fetal Electrocardiography Value of Lateral Position

RICHARD H. PAUL, MD and EDWARD H. HON, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University School of Medicine, 333 Cedar St, New Haven, Conn. 06510

Abstract

Placing the patient in the lateral recumbent posture has enabled ready passage of a lightweight vaginal-cervical endoscope, through which both fetal scalp blood samples and fetal ECG records may be obtained. A silver electrode and the forceps to apply it to the fetal scalp, both newly designed, further facilitate the procedure.
