Abstract

The successful use of an automatic, computerized scanning and pattern-recognition instrument to differentiate cells of 607 cervical cytologic smears is reported. All smears were examined both by the device and in routine fashion by cytotechnicians. The number of falsely negative reports of cervical cancer screened by this device are less than those reported by an experienced cytotechnician.
