Renal Carcinoma and Possible Renovascular Hypertension in a Primigravida

LEON C. CHESLEY, PhD, FACOG

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and the Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.

Abstract

The hypertension that results from interference with the arterial circulation of one or both kidneys is uncommon, but it may represent a rare cause of the hypertensive syndrome seen in pregnant women. The present report describes the sudden appearance of hypertension in a youthful primigravida who had no other sign of preeclampsia; whose diagnostic tests were consistent with, but not diagnostic of, renovascular hypertension; and who was subsequently shown to have a fatal carcinoma of the left kidney.
