Significance of Amniotic Fluid Analysis in Rh Sensitization

HAROLD SCHULMAN, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

Abstract

The concentration of cord bilirubin—the result of erythrocyte hemolysis—determines the quantity of pigment which escapes into amniotic fluid. As both values increase, the level of cord hemoglobin goes down—fetal anemia is increased. The determination of the clinical course to be pursued is based on the optical density readings, known to be correlated with fetal anemia, irrespective of the maternal obstetric history.
