THE COURSE OF PERINATAL MORTALITY: A REVIEW OF ETIOLOGIC FACTORS IN THE SLOANE HOSPITAL 1888-1967

Charles M. Steer, MD, FACOG and J George Moore, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, NY., and the Sloane Hospital for Women

This comparative analysis covering an 80-year period demonstrated a sharp decrease of perinatal mortality op to 1933 in both ward and private patients. The iNC.reased number of cesarean sections during the past 20 years was not accompanied by a comparable drop in perinatal mortality. Birth trauma disappeared, asphyxia diminished, and prematurity rose as causes of such mortality.
